Chess Champions
Well done to everyone in the school chess teams who did fantastically well in an online teams tournament last week.
Rhodes A and Rhodes B played in the tough Premier section which had 20 teams – 100 children – from 18 of the stronger chess schools in North London taking part.
The first team – Yr6s Andrei B, Charlie S, Yr4 Louis V, Yr3s Pratyush G and Sasha B faced teams from UCS, Coldfall, St Joseph Oxford, Beacon and St George’s New Town.
They all played incredible chess and finished in 2nd place. A fabulous feat. They missed out on top spot by just half a point!
Rhodes B – Yr6s Alex G, Cosmo D, Yr5 Julian D, James B and Yr4 Ben C – faced Beacon, Emanuel, Garden Suburb, St Georges New Town and St James.
They finished in a very respectable 8th place.
Rhodes C competed in the Championship section which had 41 teams – 205 children – from 30 schools taking part.
The team – Yr5 William G, Finn B, Yr4s Dominic L, Ethan O’C and Yr3 Gabriel G – played Eastcourt, Coldfall, Tetherdown, Garden Suburb and Horris Hill.
They did just as well as their friends in Rhodes A in also finishing in 2nd place. A brilliant achievement.
Mr Karia who runs breakfast and after school chess at Rhodes said, ’This was a new experience for the children – playing team chess on their computer at home rather than in a school hall sitting next to their friends.’
’The children responded well to this challenge and their success reflects the amazing progress they have been making by playing regularly in our lockdown online chess sessions.’

Saturday’s Online Schools Teams Chess Tournament
In the absence of school team chess this summer, my colleague Rob Willmoth who runs chess clubs in several schools including Garden Suburb, Beacon and St Andrews organised an online School Teams Tournament.
It was a new initiative but the tournament was very well supported by chess schools in North London and beyond.
There were two sections – Premier for the stronger teams and the Championship for younger children and those with less experience of tournament chess.
Premier
There were 20 teams (100 children) from 18 schools taking part in this section. Rhodes had two teams competing.
Rhodes A – Andrei B, Charlie S, Pratyush G, Louis V and Sasha B – played UCS A, Coldfall, St Joseph Oxford A, Beacon A and St George’s New Town.
They did incredibly well and finished in 2nd place. A fantastic feat.
They missed out on 1st place by half a point to St Joseph Oxford. Coldfall finished in 3rd place.
Rhodes B – Alex G, Cosmo D, Julian D, James B and Ben C – faced Beacon A, Emanuel College, Garden Suburb A, St Georges New Town and St James A.
William G, Gabriel G, Finn B, Dominic L and Ethan O – played Eastcourt A, Coldfall C, Tetherdown, Garden Suburb B and Horris Hill.
They did just as well as Rhodes A in also finishing in 2nd place sharing it with Campsbourne, Coldfall and Muswell Hill Primary. A brilliant achievement.

It was a new experience for the children – playing team chess on their computer at home rather than a school hall.
But they responded well to the challenge and reflects the progress they have been making by playing regularly in the weekly online sessions, watching the recommended chess tutorials and tackling the tactics puzzles.
Finally, many thanks go to Rhodes chess parents for their support during the tournament; in particular Louis, Ben and Dominic’s Dads who as Parent Team Managers ensured the technology side of things ran smoothly as well as keeping families/children connected over the afternoon.
Best wishes.
