Our Music curriculum at Rhodes Avenue aims to engage and inspire all pupils to develop a love of music; creating passionate, informed and confident musicians.
We have an ambitious and rich curriculum covering both the national curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum across Key stage 1 and 2.
At Rhodes Avenue we endeavour to create a personalised music curriculum that inspires and stretches our children. We have a building block approach allowing the children to build on their prior knowledge from the previous year and key stage. Skills are taught in progression throughout key stage 1 and 2. They build on the early learning goals of exploration and investigation allowing the children to make a more informed choice regarding musical elements.

Specialist teaching
We as a school are very lucky to have specialist teaching within the music department. Alongside their in class music sessions taught by the class teacher the children will receive whole class instruments lessons delivered by either Dan Shafran, Sarah Chambers or Joanne McGahon. In Y1 and 2 the children learn recorder, in Y3 and 4 the children learn the ukelele and in Y5 and 6 the children learn Samba drumming. These specialist teaching sessions really expose the children to music in practice. They help to prepare the children for the next key stage using staff notation and composing independently preparing upper KS2 children for the KS3 curriculum.
Extra curricular
Alongside the teaching that happens within the classroom we also have a huge range of extra curricular activities that support our musicians here at school. These sessions are run by the staff at Rhodes Avenue and are very well attended. This is a chance for children to have an even further, deeper experience of the music Curriculum.

Music Tuition
Haringey Council Children’s Services Music and Performing Arts Centre offer an excellent music tuition service. Parents are invited to apply for music tuition for their child in an instrument of their choice and when available a tutor comes to school to deliver 20 or 30 minute lessons. Currently at Rhodes Avenue School recorder, piano, cello, flute, trumpet and guitar teachers come to the school each week. The children are withdrawn from their class lessons for the duration of the music lesson.
Application forms are available from the school office, and there is also a scheme for assisted purchase of instruments. For more information regarding music tuition contact:
