Welcome
Welcome to the Juniors
Year 3 is the beginning of your child’s learning in Key Stage 2 and as your child begins their journey in the Juniors, we would like to promote pupil independence. We will focus on teaching children to become responsible for their own learning by encouraging them to bring in their book bags.
Our aim is for children to learn in a stimulating way, making cross-curricular links where possible, so that children gain a holistic approach to learning. We hope to enthuse children by engaging them in interesting lessons and activities during the school day, and by also providing out-of-school learning opportunities where possible. We have lots of exciting topics throughout the year including ‘Ancient Greece’, ‘The Stone Age to The Iron Age’, ‘Angry Earth’ and many more.
The Year 3 team look forward to an exhilarating year together and we thank you in advance for your continued support with your child’s learning.

English National Curriculum
Reading
The National Curriculum outlines the expectation that by the beginning of year 3, pupils should be able to read books written at an age-appropriate interest level. They should be able to read them accurately and at a speed that is sufficient for them to focus on understanding what they read rather than on decoding (working out) individual words.
They should be able to decode most new words outside their spoken vocabulary, making a good approximation to the word’s pronunciation. As their decoding skills become increasingly secure, the onus is placed
on developing a wider vocabulary. The frequency, breadth and depth of your child’s reading, will ensure that they become independent, fluent and enthusiastic readers. The aim is for your child to develop an understanding and enjoyment of stories, poetry, plays and non-fiction; learning to read silently across a wide range of subjects and genres.
Writing
Pupils are expected be able to write down their ideas with a reasonable degree of accuracy and with good sentence punctuation. The aim is for your child to develop as a writer, enhancing the effectiveness of what they write, expressing their ideas through increased evidence of grammatical conventions, with more varied vocabulary and narrative structures and beginning to understand how writing can be different from speech. Joined handwriting is expected to be the norm.
Spelling
Pupils’ spelling of common words should be correct, including common exception words. The Word Lists for years 3 and 4 (see below) are statutory. The lists are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which they often misspell.

The Mathematics National Curriculum
The focus of mathematical teaching in year 3 is to ensure that pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This will ensure that children develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers. Our pupils should develop their ability to solve a range of problems, including with simple fractions and decimal place value.
Year 3 Calculation Strategies/Guidance
Children are expected record their calculations with increasing accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning so they can analyse shapes and their properties, use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measure and number.

Year 3 Maths Knowledge and Skills Maps
In year 3 science teaching aims to enable pupils to broaden their scientific view of the world around them. They will do this through exploring, talking about, testing and developing ideas about everyday phenomena and the relationships between living things and familiar environments. They will be encouraged to ask their own questions about what they observe and make some decisions about which types of scientific enquiry are likely to be the best ways of answering them, in tandem with fairing testing and finding things out using secondary sources of information. Children are required to draw simple conclusions and use some scientific language.

Foundation Subjects
Year 3 follows the Department for Education’s National Curriculum Framework – Art, Design and Technology (D&T), Geography, History, Computing, French (MFL), Music, Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE) and PSHE – are taught within exciting topic lessons over the academic year. The Foundation subjects provide broad and balanced teaching opportunities which promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our teaching of British Values and the School’s own core values supports our pupils to develop empathy, consideration, kindness and mutual respect for different cultures, societies and religions and understand the importance of the rule of law and democracy.
The Foundation subjects are driven by different topics. All foundation subjects will be taught through this cross-curricular approach providing the different disciplines with a practical learning context. Each new topic commences with a planned ‘launch’. Launches may be a workshop, a school trip, a visitor/guest/parent presenting to the year group, the sampling of international foods/dance and/or opportunities to celebrate cultural/religious festivals.

School Routines
Dropping Off And Collecting Children
Please note that in the Juniors the children must arrive in class between 8.45-8.55am.
At the end of school parents/carers are expected to collect their children from the KS2 playground, by the glass external doors of each classroom. Please do not wait in the corridors to collect children, as children will not be able to be collected from the internal classroom door. For safeguarding reasons, we need to ensure that the class teacher is aware of which children have left the building, and using only one door ensures we are able to do so safely. If a child has not been collected by 3.40pm from the playground, the class teacher will take them to the office and parents will be called.
